Overview
A bespoke, mobile-first registration platform built for a Flip Flop Divers on Koh Lanta, Thailand. Divers complete their paperwork from home or their hotel before they arrive, turning a traditionally slow check-in into a process that takes minutes. Engineered without a framework or database, the site is lean, fast and built to perform on any phone, giving the shop a polished digital front door that feels as professional as the diving itself.
The challenge
Dive centres have a lot of paperwork to get through before anyone gets in the water. Registrations, medical questionnaires and liability waivers all need to be completed, and doing that at the front desk slows everyone down. Many customers book from overseas and want a simple way to send their details without creating an account or handing over payment. The shop needed a form that works just as well on a phone as on a desktop, supports several languages, and handles sensitive health information carefully.

The approach
The page is built with vanilla JavaScript modules and a small PHP endpoint, with no framework or build step. Customers choose between a full four-step registration (personal details, trip and emergency contact, medical questionnaire and waiver) or a quick pre-book that takes about a minute, leaving the shop to arrange the booking. The form runs in English, Spanish, German, French, Italian and Swedish. The language is detected automatically and can be switched at any time. Every submission is checked again on the server against the same option lists the form uses, and any unexpected fields are ignored. Bot protection includes a hidden honeypot field, a minimum fill time, Cloudflare Turnstile and an hourly limit per IP address. The medical questionnaire follows the standard dive medical structure and flags any answers that need physician clearance, with a warning banner placed at the top of the email. A required consent checkbox covers the handling of health data. Emails are sent through the shop's existing mailbox over SMTP, so no new mail service or third-party form tool was needed. Nothing is stored in a database. The only data kept on the server is a salted hash of each IP address and its timestamps, used for rate limiting, and the mail password sits in a config file outside the public web folder.

The outcome
The registration page is now live on its own subdomain. Divers can complete their details on a phone in around five minutes, and the shop receives each submission as a clean, readable email with the diver's details, dive plans and any medical flags laid out in one place. Staff can prepare bookings and kit before the diver walks in, which keeps the check-in desk moving. Bakewell Digital also hosts and looks after the portal on secure managed hosting. Every page is served over HTTPS, each submission has to pass Cloudflare Turnstile, server-side validation and rate limiting before an email is sent, and the mail credentials never sit in the public web folder. Updates and security checks are handled as part of ongoing care, so the shop has a registration system it never has to think about.
